LOOKING FOR KATUSA I SERVED WITH AT CAMP CASEY (1991-1992)

DARIN HEATH wrote on February 1, 2016

City and State:

Unit:

Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN

Comments: I was stationed at Camp Casey with E Co 5/20 INF from February 1991- February 1992. I had two room mates there, one was a U.S. soldier named PVT Schultz, the other was a KATUSA by the name of CPL Ko. CPL Ko had a KATUSA supervisor named SGT Jung. I only know CPL Ko by his family name, I do not remember his given name.

I'll try not to sound too dramatic, but this is a difficult subject. My U.S. Army room mate periodically attempted to or did humiliate CPL Ko. I was a stupid young man with no compassion at the time for CPL Ko, even though he attempted many times to befriend us and was very kind. I have felt guilty for the last twenty five years and would like to formally and respectfully apologize to CPL Ko and his family for my apathy toward the way he was treated. I also want to apologize for my lack of compassion and participation in any attempt to make fun of or humiliate CPL Ko. He did not deserve our cruelty.

Since that time, and out of a desire to make amends in my own way, I have immersed myself in Korean culture, history, and food. This is my way of trying to understand CPL Ko's homeland and attempt to understand people from Korea better. I'm not saying this to impress anyone, I just wanted to communicate my sincerity in wanting to display my deep regrets for any part I had in affecting CPL Ko's life in any negative way.

I know this is a long shot and it will probably be very hard to find this man. I will attempt to find him for the rest of my life; it is the honorable and right thing to do.

LOOKING FOR KATUSA CPL WON, JUNG JIN WHO SERVED AT CAMP STANLEY 1975-1976 WITH HHB 1/15 FA

Comments: I served in the Battalion Maintenance Section as the PLL Clerk from September, 1975 though October, 1976 when we were members of the Headquarter, Headquarters Battery for the First of the Fifteenth Field Artillery Battalion (HHB, 1/15th FA).

My roommate during this period of time was a KATUSA soldier by the name of CPL Won, Jung Jin (I believe this to be the correct spelling). We use to call him JJ for short and he was a wheeled vehicle mechanic. He was about 21 or 22 at that time.

Today, 27 November, 2015, he would be 60 or 62 range.

I'm back in Korean until September, 2016 and would like to meet up with JJ or any of his family members who can tell me about him. I'll be bring pictures of JJ when I come back from leave in Jan-2016.

Any help I can get in finding would be greatly appreciated and rewarded.

Respectfully,
Bob Stanek

Comments: I am looking for a Korean citizen named Chae, Byunsuk who served as a KATUSA at Outpost Harry during the Korean War.

A Korean War Veteran asked me to help find Mr. Chae in order to invite him to The Outpost Harry Survivor's Association 19th Annual Reunion in San Diego this summer.

I know there is probably one in a million chance of finding Mr. Chae but I would really like to help this Korean War Veteran find him. They were very good friends during the war and shared the same sense of humor and outlook on life despite cultural and language barriers.

The only info I have on Mr. Chae is that he served at Outpost Harry and is probably around 70 years old.

If you have any leads or can recommend other sites that can find veterans, please contact me. I'd really appreciate it.

Have a great week,
Jiyoung

Comments: During the last Chinese offensive in July 1953, The ROK Army took the burnt of the offensive. The ROK Capital Division began to fall back but was hit by enemy forces at this time causing units to fall back farther than intended.
One of the 21 strong points survived because of Lt. Col Kim. He rallied those ROK soldiers who were willing to fight into the bunker complex.
Inside this bunker complex was an American 3 man FAC (forward air controller) and an American 28 man unit testing battlefield radar with AA weapons.
The combination of guts, leadership with a little bit of help by air and artillery support guided by radar at night and in the fog, saved this unit from being wiped out.

Nice picture. I wish someone had a web page about the camp, so I could add a link to it on my web page.

When I was in the area in 69-70, it was a Engineer unit there. Was at CRC in 81-82, and Essayons was a Artillery Camp. Now closed.

I always had a Korean photagrapher that ran around the camp take pictures. I had a ton of pics but the house fire took everthing.

I drove an Ambulance to CRC, Camp Stanley, and Camp Casey all the
time.

I was at Camp Essayons from June 1970 to September 1970. wd4ngb
There was an engineer unit there at that time. 13th Engineers (Combat) if I remember right. My 201 file says it was the 11th Engineers though but I sure do remember it being the 13th. I was in Charlie company in the middle of the compound. They tried to make me the company clerk the first week there. It didn't work out though because they found out it took me all day to do the morning report. Still can't type worth a damn They put in the POL dump refueling equipment. I got to go everywhere but being new in country I don't remember every place. Camp Stanley, CRC, Camp Casey, Camp Indian. Even made it up by the DMZ once or twice. Some job site that wasn't far from some tanks that were doing menuevers or just playing Army!!! A couple of them was low on fuel and asked me if I could fuel them. I did but got a butt chewed for doing so. I figured everything was painted green so what the heck. Fueled a fixed wing plane up by Casey once that was low on fuel and landed just South of the Camp Casey. He said he was spraying insecticide. He said it was an air field but It looked like just an over sized road to me. Got my butt chewed for that also. The colors to the engineer battalion went state side and I was transferred acrossed Uijongbu to A company 51st Signal Battalion at Camp Piliaau. That is a very funny story in itself. Ended up in the supply room. Just destined to type I guess. If any one remembers which engineer battalion was at Essayons at that time let me know would you. Trying to get records straightened out.

stilltruckin: Welcome to the site. The 11th Engineer Bn was at Essayons and Stanley. The 13th Eng Bn was under the 7th Inf Div, and were up in the Camp Casey area. I was departing Cp Stanley about the time you arrived at Essayons. I was in D Company 4th Maint Bn, and the 36th Engineer Gp was one of the units we supported.

Hey I just thought of some thing maybe you can answer for me since you were there all those times. When ever I went to Soul to exchange laundry and equipment while at Camp Piliaau I would go down I believe route 3 it was and I noticed a mound of dirt that was as long as you could see from the road. When I questioned my civilian worker about it he told me that it was the civilian control line and it went all the way across the country and in the case of an invasion all citizens had to get south of that line because that was where it was intended to stop the invasion. I remember I thought it was just another one of the stories that was told to all the new guy's but I always did wonder about it. The reason I asked him was because we seen a Koren helo spraying and it looked just like the one that sprayed all around Camp Essayons the month before and he said it was spraying to kill the foliage. I told him I was told they were spraying insecticides and he told me that the Americans spray the insecticides with planes and the Koreans spray to kill the foliage with helo's. It kind of fit because the helo didn't go south of that mound of dirt. At that time any way. I always wondered about the story about the mound of dirt though because when I tried to find out from other GI's they didn't know anything about it. Maybe it was just one of those stories?

Dang if it isn't so! Those picture arn't exactly what I saw but they make more sense of things. I think the one I went trough all the time was tunnel like if I remember right. It must of been in process of being redone. Thanks that clears up a lot. Funny what pictures clear up of memories.

Man i loved your pic of the front gate..i remember it well. I was in B Btry 6/37 '80-'81 I read a post from a guy who drove an ambulance between CRC and Stanley about that time. I once twisted my foot backwards coming off the ramp of a CH-47. After a dust off back to Essayons, an ambulance took me to stanley. It may have been you man. Remember the "Business Girl" we ran into on the way there? Your side mirror hit her in the shoulder..and we ran a ROK roadblock on the way back, remember? If anyone was there or were in B Btry on "the planet" about that time i'd love to hear from you....take care Brothers.."on the minute"!!

Was at Camp Essayons from early 83 to late 84..C Btry 6/37 FA MLRS, shit hit the fan a couple of times. Especially with the slicky boys that the north sent down. We were out and about, in the Chawron Valley highway 1. Also spent time in the river and swamps north of camp and patrolling that area-could we have been exposed to the defoliants that were used back in the seventies. On the DMV they were spraying in 84. Still remember going from covered position to an entire area of sand and rock on the ridges overlooking the valley

I was station at Camp Essayons, 6th BN 37th FA, HQ Btry, from Nov 1976 to Nov 1977. I work out of the motor pool and was the PLL clerk, 76D10. Maintain and ordered repair parts for all vehicles and the M1-10 howziers the Big GUNS. The village outside the compound at that time was called Hockamarie in the Uijeongbu area. I toured the DMZ and had to sign a wavier and if I got shot while on the tour the Military wouldn't be held responsible. We were all the time in the field and the only duties I conducted was perimeter guard. Lying around in that foliage that has been sprayed with agent orange.
